What is Parent University?

The Parent University mission is to promote parental participation through extended learning to strengthen their child’s school experience and well-being through ongoing education. Parent University is a series of parenting classes designed to train and empower parents of school age children. Parenting is a lifelong learning process, and Parent University provides ongoing support to parents in various aspects of academic support, parenting challenges, managing home finances, learning new skills, and refreshing old ones. Parent University drives home the importance and connection that parent education assists school age children with their educational needs. The California Adult Education Program (CAEP) provides funding for parent education classes in a positive environment with the support of local businesses and community organizations.

Duarte Unified School District supports parent education by dedicating funds from the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), Title 1, and the California Adult Education Program (CAEP). This funding supports parental involvement, which is one of the eight areas of state priority that are, addressed in the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) under (1) Efforts to seek parent input and (2) Promotion of parental participation. The CAEP goal that supports parent education falls under current legislation for adult programs designed to develop knowledge and skills to assist elementary and secondary school age children to succeed academically.
 

Parent University Sessions:

We want Parent University to become recognizable in the Upper San Gabriel Valley to parents as they move into the area or visiting with friends and relatives. We want to establish informative, engaging and practical sessions that parents promote in Duarte and surrounding cities. The Parent University six week sessions are conducted by D’Veal Family and Youth Services, Foothill Federal Credit Union, City of Hope, LA County Department of Mental Health and Citrus Community College to name a few. 

The topics chosen for Parent University are through parent surveys, meetings, i.e., DELAC, School Site Council, and PTA. The topics include issues that will attract a wide variety of parents to the classes. In addition, these topics appeal to parents of children of all ages and broad enough to attract parents with differing parenting philosophies. To name a few, class topics include:

  • How to Fund College?
  • Dealing with Anxiety and Depression
  • Dream Act
  • ESL Literacy
  • Helping Children with Homework
